Clarke Reynolds is an artist from England known for his innovative use of braille in art, inviting viewers to experience his work through touch. From the age of six, Clarke knew he wanted to be an artist. At that time, he was blind in his right eye due to retinitis pigmentosa, yet a visit to a local gallery sparked a lifelong passion. Art became an escape and a way to express himself.
Though he left school early due to health issues, Clarke’s determination led him to earn a college degree in art and model making. When Clarke’s remaining sight began to diminish, leaving him with just five degrees of vision, he learned braille, a skill that transformed his life and art.
In terms of technology, Clarke uses an iPad for his daily tasks, including using Procreate to design his art. After designing the art, he gets thousands of wooden discs cut for his projects to represent braille dots. Clarke believes technology can fail and suggests embracing braille as the primary technology.
One of Clarke’s career highlights was his debut exhibition, Journey by Dots, at Aspex Portsmouth in 2022. The exhibit featured his life story through braille art, transforming the gallery into an immersive experience. Clarke has since inspired countless individuals worldwide, especially children with visual impairments, to pursue their dreams.
Dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others, Clarke has introduced more than 10,000 students to braille through art. He is also a proud patron of the UK charity VICTA, advocating for individuals with visual impairments.
Clarke’s advice for young people with vision loss is to “fulfill your dreams, no matter what they are.” With unwavering optimism, he believes that while society may set limitations, individuals should reach for the sky.
When not working, Clarke enjoys audiobooks, movies, and building with LEGO bricks, with his partner’s help in audio-describing the instructions. With dreams of becoming the most famous blind artist in the world, Clarke continues to inspire through his motto: “Art is my light as my world is getting darker.”
