Are you prepared for an applicant with vision loss?

Thank you for your interest in learning more about people who are blind or who have low vision, referred to as people with vision loss in our educational video titled Questions About Vision Loss.

This one-hour self-paced interactive video, available for 1 or 1.5 hours of SHRM credit, covers common questions employers have about hiring people with vision loss. After viewing important, basic information about this population in the introduction module, you’ll get the chance to explore three topic areas and choose videos that address your questions and concerns. There are 42 questions to choose from in these three topic areas: Employment-Related Questions, General Questions, and Curiosity Questions.

Have a question related to employment concerns? The “Employment-Related Questions” section includes questions under the following topics areas:

  • Work capabilities of B/LV people (e.g., What kind of jobs can people with vision loss do?)
  • Interacting with B/LV people in the workplace (e.g., What should I know about interviewing someone with vision loss?)
  • Common concerns about employing B/LV people (e.g., What if I can’t appropriately accommodate the person with vision loss?)
  • Benefits of hiring B/LV people (e.g., Are there any benefits to hiring someone with vision loss?)
  • How does someone with vision loss… (e.g., How do people with vision loss get to work?)

Have a question related to vision loss in general? The “General Questions” section includes questions under the following topics areas:

  • Facts about blindness and vision loss (e.g., What does someone who is legally blind see?)
  • Managing daily activities (e.g., How do you manage in daily life being blind?)
  • Getting assistance (e.g., Do blind people want help from sighted people?)

Have a question about the experiences of people with vision loss that’s not polite to ask? We cover those topics in the “Curiosity Questions” section, including:

  • What are your dreams like?
  • Do you enjoy movies, TV, and sports, or are they boring since you can't see them?
  • How do you know how you look?
  • Do you wish you could see?
  • What’s the hardest thing about being blind?
  • How do you get comfortable in a new setting?

To demonstrate what you learned about blindness and low vision through watching the video, you will be asked to complete a pre and post knowledge quiz, which will each take a few minutes. You will need spend at least 50 minutes viewing the video to receive your 1 hour of SHRM credit.

If you have a little more time, we welcome you to participate in a research study in addition to viewing the video. If you participate in the study, you will answer a more extensive set of pre and post questions (before and after watching the video for 50 minutes). You will receive 1.5 hours of SHRM credit for video viewing and study participation.
